In search of her husband, Heather reluctantly travels from London to his Texas home town where she is vocal about her dislike of snakes, spiders, and cowboys. She vows to spend no more than two weeks away from her city apartment but finds a slew of secrets swirling like a Texas tornado. While her husband keeps his emotional distance, and she tries to maintain her British reserve, Heather is nevertheless intrigued by the friendliness of Fort Worth locals. Despite developing friendships, Heather struggles to find out what illness her mother-in-law is suffering from, how a neighbor fits into her husband’s past and why a vagrant sits across the street each day staring at the house. One by one, Heather uncovers the mysteries surrounding her husband’s family. Can her marriage be saved, and will her new Texas friends entice Heather to share their love for the Lone Star State?

I got this book- Storms & Secrets by Ann Summerville free from the kindle bookstore. The description of the book had me curious because I live in the DFW area. But, right from the first chapter all the way to the end, I just couldn't find it believable. If I were Heather, I would have kicked Travis in the butt and then got on a plane. Most women I know wouldn't stand for such behavior. I mean a guy won't even tell his own wife what kind of illness his mother has?
Then there were the depictions of Ft. worth. There are no women who smoke pipes! If you were to judge by the author's description one might get the idea that Ft. Worth was a small hick town prone to frequent storms and tornadoes. False on both counts. Cowtown does exist, but the most prominent attraction- Billy Bobs was left out. Also, there was no mention of the museums, Sundance Square and other more sophisticated areas of a rapidly growing city. There were mysteries to be solved and Heather sets out to find the truth behind Travis's family secrets. The only reason I made it to the end of this one was to see if the family illness would lead to issues for Heather in the future and if she continued to take crap from Travis. You will have to find out what she decides about her future for yourself , since I won't be including any spoilers.
This isn't the worst book ever or anything like that, but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. Overall I would give a C-.

Storms and Secrets edition by Ann Summerville Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

It's a quiet neighborhood, but troubles lurk behind the heavy drapes in a modest Texas home. Heather, newly arrived from England, wants to solve the mysteries behind her husband's furtive actions, her mother-in-law's illness, and other odd characters she encounters in the area. Ann Summerville's second book demonstrates that her first "A Graceful Death", was no fluke. She is a skilled writer - excellent pacing, well drawn characters, delightful settings, and a charming sense of humor keep the pages turning. Enjoy the stormy secrets!
Storms & Secrets by Ann Summerville is the tale of Heather, an English woman who falls in love with a cowboy and marries him, only to have him leave her and head home to Texas. Tired of waiting for him to return, she hops on a plane and follows. Being a proper British lady, she's not prepared for the Texas heat, quirky but friendly people, and a husband who not only won't talk with her, he avoids her.

She's given herself two weeks to talk her husband into coming back to England. She becomes close to those who befriend her, including the man who gives her a ride from the airport after her husband is a no-show. But the days go past and she's no closer to getting her husband back. In fact, things become more and more complicated.

The author, Ann Summerville, was born in England and now lives in Fort. Worth, so she definitely knows both areas. I don't know how long she's lived in Texas, but I felt she got the characters right. Some were strange, some were friendly, some were quirky. It was interesting to see Texas through the eyes of Heather.

I learned to really like Heather as she begins to like Texas and the new friends she's made. If she stays in Texas (and you'll have to read the book to find out if she does), I could see her adapting and become a Texan. I liked Storms & Secrets enough to give it a rating of Hel-of-a-Story, since I cheered for the Brit in a stand-off with a Texan.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is the type of book for everyone, no ugly words or scenes.
TEXAS TWIST ON A MYSTERY BY A BRITISH AUTHOR - EVEN INCLUDES A TORNADO! WHAT COULD BE BETTER READING! THIS BOOK WAS PARTICULARLY FUN FOR ME SINCE I AM A FORT WORTH GIRL AND RECOGNIZED MANY OF THE LOCATIONS IN ANN'S BOOK. THE AUTHOR IS CONSISTENTLY INNOVATIVE IN HER PLOTS AND I WILL HAPPILY CONTINUE READING HER BOOKS.
I was a little confused after finishing this book. The mystery is still a mystery as I'm not sure what I was supposed to discover at the grand finale the type of illness that was the focus of family concerns, the undisclosed personal relationships between the main characters or the political wranglings between the natural gas folks and the hotel developers.

The descriptions of the characters and settings were delightful. The personality traits for the supporting cast were well presented. BH however seemed to be a mass of contradictions. The foreshadowing telegraphed by her repeated references to her fears was similiar to driving home a small finishing nail with a very large hammer.

A pleasant read, but not gripping.
